International Arrest Warrant Issued for Ex-Minister of Transport

On Tuesday, a Caracas journalist released information that a former Venezuelan transport minister has been indicted for embezzlement, for the illegal “purchase” of three public ferries.

Santa Elena, April 21st, 2015. (venezuelanalysis.com)- On Tuesday, a Caracas journalist released information that a former Venezuelan transport minister has been indicted for embezzlement, for the illegal “purchase” of three public ferries.

Herbert Garcia Plaza, a high-ranking military official and former minister of transport, and subsequently of food and nutrition, was also the director of an economic organism aimed at combatting corruption.

According to Sebastiana Barraez, of the weekly newspaper Quinto Dia, the former minister’s illicit dealings were divulged by the country’s current port authority, Julian Marchan Lugo.

The military man, who holds the title of Major General, is believed to be outside the country.

The judge overseeing the case, Nahilu Sanchez, has emitted a red alert though Interpol for Garcia Plaza’s capture abroad.  

The Venezuelan government, who has launched numerous offensives against internal corruption in the past three years, has not yet released an official statement on the matter.
