On 31 May, Caracas celebrated the one year anniversary of the Ruta Nocturna, an event organised by the government to promote nightlife in the city. The event takes place in streets linking the city’s major museums and art galleries. Caracas has long suffered from high crime rates, which have dissuaded many residents of the capital from venturing out at night in recent years. According to AVN, since its inception last year the Ruta Nocturna has drawn nearly 20,000 people with live entertainment including music, dance, food and art. Organisers hope to make the Ruta Nocturna a regular event in other cities across Venezuela in the future.
