Last month was the first congress of the Venezuelan HipHop movement. It was called by the HipHopRevolucion collective, and discussed the creation of Urban Art Schools (EPATU) jointly with the collective and with the ministry of communes. The three day conference also includes workshops on political formation, music and video production, and documentary projection.
The statement that came out of the congress began, “Hip hop is one of the people’s expressions of power. It’s a culture that originally came out of conditions of poverty, from the most forgotten, marginalised, and oppressed spaces of society. We are a resistance movement that stands up to capitalism and its domination systems… We recognise our origins and we join with the collective construction of our barrios and communities, for a completely just society…”
Here are photos from that congress as well as other recent EPATU events.
