Thousands of Venezuelans joyfully dug their hands in the soil on Sunday, May 31, planting 3,500 trees in Caracas as well as 187,000 seeds in the Waraira Repano, San Esteban, and Henri Pittier national parks in inauguration of the Sowing the Motherland National Reforestation Plan.

As part of the new initiative, the Bolivarian government plans to recover 11,885 hectares afflicted by more than 700 forest fires over the course of this past dry season in honor of the 9th anniversary of Mission Trees of the Motherland, which spearheads forest fire-fighting and reforestation efforts.

By the start of 2016, the government aims to have planted 2,500 species of trees in Caracas alone, as well as over 10 million fruit trees in the nation’s schools.

President Maduro announced on Sunday that Mission Trees of the Motherland would be allocated 345 million Bolivars as well as a further 2 million dollars via the China Fond.
