Ali Primera's 71st Birthday
By Chris Carlson - Venezuelanalysis.com
Venezuelan folk singer Ali Primera was a musician and political activist, and is still perhaps Venezuela's most famous musician. He is known as "el cantor del pueblo" (the people's singer) due to his lyrics that often described the living conditions of ordinary Venezuelans and protested against US imperialism the exploitation of Latin America's poor. He was born and raised in a barrio on the outskirts of Punto Fijo, Falcón, located right next to Venezuela's largest oil refinery, where his family still lives to this day. In 2004, the government constructed a museum next to his home as a tribute to the famous singer who was killed in a car crash in 1985.

The museum is full of artwork and Primera's discography.

Outside the museum is an open garden and amphitheater used for music performances. Several concerts were planned for this week to celebrate Primera's birthday..
Literally right next to Ali Primera's home is the Amuay refinery complex where a tragic explosion occurred earlier this year, killing more than 40 people and destroying many houses and businesses. Primera's family home also suffered damage from the blast..
