Venezuelan folk singer Ali Primera was a musician and political activist, and is still perhaps Venezuela’s most famous musician. He is known as “el cantor del pueblo” (the people’s singer) due to his lyrics that often described the living conditions of ordinary Venezuelans and protested against US imperialism the exploitation of Latin America’s poor. He was born and raised in a barrio on the outskirts of Punto Fijo, Falcón, located right next to Venezuela’s largest oil refinery, where his family still lives to this day. In 2004, the government constructed a museum next to his home as a tribute to the famous singer who was killed in a car crash in 1985.
