On Sunday the 12th of July, thousands of people took to the streets of Caracas demanding equality for Venezuela’s gay, lesbian and bisexual community. The marchers demanded the right to same-sex marriage and the same legal rights as those enjoyed by heterosexual married couples.

United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV)  Representative, Juan Carlos Aléman Perez, addressed the crowd and assured them that a commission in the National Assembly would review their demands.

Whilst celebrating the advances made so far for equal rights within the revolution, demonstrators highlighted that there was still a long way to go in terms of sexual equality, and stated that homophobia still exists within the National Assembly.
