Venezuela’s revolutionary leader Hugo Chávez started off with a reformist outlook when he got to power in the late 1990s. He talked about the Third Way, and searching, in his words, for some middle ground between capitalism and socialism.

However, as the project advanced and faced the whip of counter-revolution, Chávez came to understand that the Bolivarian Revolution must have a socialist horizon. As he explains in this 2006 speech, it’s impossible for capitalism to be humanist.
