On 28 July, Venezuela commemorated former president Hugo Chavez’s birthday. Had Chavez not passed away earlier this year, he would have turned 59 on Sunday. His birthday brought supporters to the streets all over Venezuela. In Merida, the youth wing of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (JPSUV) called on youth groups of the left to hold activities in Bolivar Square. With music, dance, a march though town and an assortment of cakes of varying structural viability, Merida remembered a president that redefined Venezuelan politics. A mural of Chavez was also painted in central Merida. Commemorations also took place in the capital, Caracas, and Chavez’s birthplace in the village of Sabatena, Barinas state.
