Mérida, 13th October 2014 (Venezuelanalysis.com) – Two men have been arrested and are being held on suspicion of the murders of pro-government Venezuelan lawmaker Robert Serra and his assistant Maria Herrera.

The men, named Eduwin Torres and Carlos Garcia, are being held at the intelligence service (SEBIN) headquarters, after a Caracas judge admitted the public prosecutor’s accusations against them.

No other official information was given about the men, but local media say that both were Serra’s bodyguards, and that Torres was also a Caracas police officer.

If the two men arrested are found guilty, they would face up to thirty years in prison.

Serra and Herrera were stabbed to death in the lawmaker’s Caracas home on Wednesday 1 October, an act which shook the administration of President Nicolas Maduro and the wider country. Officials presume the murders to be pre-planned and politically motivated.

Serra (27) was a rising figure within the governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), and was the country’s youngest legislator. The investigation into the material and intellectual authors of the murders continues.
