On 23 May, the Andean city of Merida held its’ annual commemoration of the Campaña Admirable. The event marks the arrival of the 19th Century South American liberator, Simon Bolivar in Merida during his campaign to free the west of Venezuela from Spanish control. The day involves a series of military services and a parade through the city. For the march, the children of Merida dress as historical figures from the Campaña Admirable. Needless to say, there are plenty of knee high Bolivars.
