Venezuela’s first satellite was launched in 2008 under the Hugo Chávez government. The Simon Bolivar satellite was later accompanied by a second, both of which were designed by joint Venezuelan and Chinese teams. It was seen as the start of a Venezuelan aerospace industry at the time. (Reference)
