On October 28, 2018, Steve Ellner addressed an attentive solidarity audience at the Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library in Oakland. Based on his 40 years of teaching and research in Venezuela, Ellner gave a balanced assessment of the Caribbean nation's social programs, participatory democracy, and economic policies. Ellner argued for solidarity with the Venezuelan government in light of regime change plans by Trump in coalition with regional and internal rightwing elements.
