The Alternative School of Barrio Pueblo Nuevo. Mérida, Venezuela

This is a video about a local educational experience in Barrio Pueblo Nuevo in the city of Mérida Venezuela. The teachers (cooperative educational facilitators) created a tutoring space three years ago to work with the children who were at risk of dropping out of school. The project evolved into an alternative school that is managed collectively and embraces a pedagogy focused on empowerment and community transformation. The school connects with the community, which suffers from poverty and drug related violence, through educational group projects that reclaim the neighborhood as a social space and promote a more just and solidarity-oriented society. The documentary was made by the children and grew out of a film workshop.
