Caracas, 29 Jun. AVN.- The member states of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) approved Venezuela’s adhesion as full member in the regional bloc today.

The presidents of Mercosur member nations; Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay (Paraguay has also just been expelled) issued a statement that the integration process of the bloc is a mechanism to bolster integral development, face poverty and social exclusion, on the basis of solidarity and cooperation.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez said today that the approval of this country as a full member of Mercosur means “a defeat of North American imperialism and lackey bourgeoisie of the region”.

Chavez said that Venezuela’s bourgeoisie, together with Paraguay’s, had done everything possible to avoid Venezuela’s incorporation to the regional bloc.

In a phone call aired live on television, Chavez said this is “a historical day and it shall be commemorated and celebrated”.

Venezuela’s adhesion protocol was signed in Caracas on July 4, 2006. It is expected that its incorporation will be made official at a special meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 31 this year.
