Venezuelan Fencing Champion Ruben Limardo Takes Olympic Gold, Thanks Chavez
Liverpool, August 2nd 2012 (Venezuelanalysis.com) – Venezuelan fencer Ruben Limardo took a gold medal in the London Olympics yesterday, beating Norway’s Bartosz Piasecki 15-10 in the men’s epee final.
Limardo’s victory, which has been widely celebrated throughout the country, is the first time in 44 years that the country has taken home a gold medal from the games, and brings Venezuela’s total gold medal wins at the Olympics to 2.
Speaking to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez following his victory, Limardo thanked the head of state, his fellow team members and the people of Venezuela for their support.
“In the future it won’t just be one medal, it will be more. Because you (President Chavez) are doing an excellent job, getting involved in sport just as it should be, something that we’ve never seen before,” he said.
