Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles has refused to acknowledge the results of the election, claiming the government committed fraud. In what follows, I will list all of the alleged evidence of fraud cited by Capriles, and explain why every single example is either demonstrably false, or extremely implausible.

Why was the presidential election result so close, and why did some government supporters switch to supporting Capriles? As the opposition causes violence around the country, calling &quot;fraud&quot;, what was it that worked with Capriles&#039; campaign, and that didn&#039;t with Maduro&#039;s?

<title>The 14 April Venezuelan Presidential Election Campaign: Start of a New Era</title>

Although the results of the presidential elections in a few weeks are quite predictable, we are going through a fragile, vulnerable period, with a future that is less predictable. These elections, because of their place in history- the start of the era of the Bolivarian revolution without Chavez – have some special characteristics and factors.

Internal debate and criticism of the PSUV and its current state election campaign, as well as proper grassroots involvement, has been put off, and put off, because in this incredibly democratic country there is always some kind of election coming up. Yet for how long will such sacrifices be made in the name of defeating the capitalist opposition?

                    I’ve witnessed the self-assured superiority of Paris, the imperial arrogance of Washington, the capitalist decadence of New York’s Manhattan, parliamentary elections in Germany, and my fair share of elections in Britain. In none of them have I encountered a democratic political culture as profound as Venezuela’s.&amp;nbsp;

Although the GPP, an organisation which formally unites 35,000 Venezuelan movements and collectives, is just in its initial stages, we try to get a hang of what kind of organisation it could be, and the processes and forces that have been involved in its formation.

A year and a half before Venezuela’s December 2012 presidential elections, the debate has already begun. As is often the case, both pro-Chavez and opposition forces are discussing their views amongst themselves, and not with each other. In an attempt to bring opposing Venezuelan voices together, two members of opposing political forces were asked a series of questions relating to political life, education, and the media, among other things. Here are their answers.

But it also represents a comeback for Venezuela&#039;s once moribund opposition.

<title>An Important but Risky Victory for Venezuela and for Socialism</title>

The ten
percentage point victory (55-45%) that President Chávez and his movement
achieved on Sunday represents a
very important victory for the effort to create socialism in Venezuela. However, Chávez and his supporters ought to recognize
that this victory comes with a certain degree of risk because it increases the
Bolivarian movement&amp;#39;s dependency on its charismatic leader.

<title>Smoke and Mirrors: An Analysis of Human Rights Watch’s Report on Venezuela</title>

The September 18, 2008 Human Rights Watch report, “A Decade Under
Chavez,” raises a few problems with regard to the protection of
political rights in Venezuela, but the few places where it is on target
are almost completely drowned in a sea of de-contextualization,
trumped-up accusations, and a clear and obvious bias in favor of the
opposition and against the government.

                    A collective discussion is occurring
throughout the revolutionary movement led by President Hugo Chavez
following the defeat of the proposed constitutional reform proposals —
that were intended to deepen the revolution to help open the way
towards socialism — in the December 2 referendum.

The failed reform was the first defeat for the Bolivarian movement, after 12 national electoral contests, since Hugo Chávez was elected in 1998, and the first time that he and his movement had been forced to examine which way the process must go if it is to advance.

<title>Making Victory of Defeat: What Next for Venezuela?</title>

While we reflect on errors made, we should
not lose sight of the unique opportunities posed by this turn of events.
Sunday&amp;#39;s referendum defeat marks a critical juncture in the Bolivarian
Revolution: with the most direct, state-led path to socialism effectively
blocked, Chávez will have no other alternative than to rely on the mobilization
of the popular revolutionary masses.

As the struggle to deepen Venezuela&amp;#39;s revolution through the
framework of the pending constitutional reforms intensifies, so too does the
battle to create the new United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). The
simultaneous campaign for constitutional reforms and the formation of the PSUV
means the two are intricately connected.

Who are &amp;quot;the students,&amp;quot; and what do they represent? In recent days, it has become clear that these student mobilizations have been, in fact, largely directed and supported by sectors of the opposition, all in an effort to provoke, in Chávez&amp;#39;s own words, a &amp;quot;soft coup&amp;quot; against the revolutionary government.

Venezuela’s presidential recall referendum was one of Latin America’s most historic electoral events of the past twenty five years. The vote contributes to the future direction of other progressive projects throughout the world because Chavez and his Bolivarian Project have, despite their flaws, opened the door for a progressive alternative to neo-liberal globalization.
